The latest ultra resolution industrial image sensors offer impressive pixel throughput, such as 25 Megapixels at 72 frames per second. These pixel rates can no longer be transferred to the PC via Camera Link but can via interfaces such as CoaXPress (CXP). The resulting cameras can offer faster frame rates at lower resolutions through the Region of Interest (ROI) function.

For instance, the Q-12A180/CXP camera utilizes the CMOSIS CMV12000 global shutter image sensor and is a 12 Megapixel CMOS global shutter camera that delivers images of 4096 x 3072 pixels at 187 frames per second (fps), this is a total of 2.353 billion pixels per second or 2.3 GPixel/s. With smaller resolutions, the frame speed can get well into the thousands of fps. Below is a table of some of the frame rates possible with different resolution combinations. Theoretically this sensor would be able to transfer a resolution of 100×100 pixels at 235,000 fps. However, due to the design of the pixel array and readout circuit of the image sensor, the frame rate that would be achieved t is actually 4,738 fps. By studying the image sensor, we at Adimec have built a frame speed calculator which allows us to determine the practical frame speed at any Region Of Interest which we use to fit the camera to the customer needs.

Another example is our Sapphire 25 megapixel CXP camera. The S-25A70/CXP camera utilizes the ON Semiconductor Vita25k global shutter image sensor and is a 25 Megapixel CMOS global shutter camera that delivers images of 5120 x 5120 pixels at a maximum 72 full frames per second (fps), this is a total of 1.887 billion pixels per second or 1.9 GPixel/s. Again, we have a table with some different resolution, frame speed combinations. With this image sensor and camera, the frame speed can be increased with a decrease in horizontal resolution.
